Excerpt from Musical

This is an excerpt from a musical I am currently writing. In this musical, there is a character named Madison who is the best friend of the lead female protagonist. There is a scene in the first act in which a poetry read is taking place at a coffee shop. The following is a poem supposedly written by Madison and shared with the audience. In actuality, the author of the musical (me) is the writer of the poem.

Madison's poem about love (no title given within the context of the musical)

The heart wants what the heart wants
I heard her say
How very true this remains
Still to this day
Parents will raise us as they will
In religion
Their diets, habits, beliefs
or in absence
but we will be as we are
nature, nurture
these things all take part in our
destined future
and just as I love chocolate
and hate tofu
it is a matter of taste

that I love you.
